Wilfred was the Pilot of a Handley Page Halifax Mk II bomber of Number 1662 Heavy Conversion Unit (HCU).

The aircraft, serial number V9983, was airborne from its base at Blyton in Lincolnshire to carry out night circuit training.

The aircraft spun into the ground at Graizelound near Haxey in Lincolnshire just 5 minutes after taking off at 21:13hrs. It is thought that the pilot took action to avoid a mid-air collision.

All of the crew were killed in the crash. Wilfred was the Son of Patrick Joseph and Alice Kate Daly, of Leederville, Western Australia.
